St Mary Church

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I would like to join the parish. How do I do that?

We are happy to have you as part of our parish community. Simply contact Laurene Hirko in the parish office. She may be reached at 508.278.2226 or via email at . Ideally, we would like you to meet one of the members of the pastoral staff in order to personally welcome you and share a little about our life together as a parish.

Q: I don’t live within the town of Uxbridge. May I still join Saint Mary Parish?

Yes. Our parishioners come from over eight different surrounding communities. You need not live in Uxbridge in order to belong to Saint Mary Parish.

Q: Am I expected to become involved in any specific way?

The most basic way by which we express our belonging to the Catholic community is by striving to live the gospel of Jesus Christ in our daily lives. This is a vocation to which we’re all called by virtue of our baptism.

As members of our parish community, we invite you to nourish your faith through regular participation in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We’d encourage you to prayerfully consider sharing in some kind of ministry where your gifts and talents can be used to build up the church and serve our neighbors, especially those in need. As a fellow steward of the material and spiritual goods of our parish, we invite you to reflect upon how you might best help the parish be faithful to its mission.

Every parishioner responds to the invitation in a different way. That’s part of the diversity, the complexity (and the beauty) of our parish family!

Q: I would like to join Saint Mary’s. However, my spouse is not Catholic. Is that a problem? Will he or she be pressured to join?

Your spouse is always welcome among us. However, he or she is not pressured in any way to join the parish. Your spouse is welcome to participate (or not to participate), as he or she deems appropriate.

Q: We are not parishioners but live in the Uxbridge area. We would like to have our baby baptized. How do we prepare for that?

If you are not parishioners of Saint Mary’s, please visit us in the parish office so that we can meet you, congratulate you, and register you as new parishioners.

There is a gathering for parents, held periodically, which you will be asked to attend. The gathering explores the meaning of the Sacrament of Baptism and the vocation of Christian parenting. At the meeting arrangements and scheduling for the celebration of Baptism are made.

Q: Our family has moved from place to place over the past few years. In the process, our children have not been able to fully participate in Religious Education. Is there any way we might “catch them up” or integrate them into religious education now?

Yes. In order to attend to your family’s needs, it would be best to meet with Annette Gion, our Director of Faith Formation, in order to explore how we might appropriately work with your children. We realize that every family is different and we will do our best to attend to each family’s specific needs.

Q: How do I financially support the work of the parish?

When a person joins our parish, they usually begin receiving monthly offertory envelopes by mail. These are placed in the offering basket at Mass on Sunday. They can also be mailed at your convenience to the parish.

Some parishioners prefer using a Direct Deposit method of parish support by which a specific amount is drawn weekly or monthly from their checking or savings account. The direct deposit method assures that your gift is always received whether you are in church or away.

Your financial support to the parish is tax-deductible. However, the IRS requires documentation of your contribution. Hence, your use of either offertory envelopes or direct deposit enables us to provide you with the needed documentation.

Q: I have been away from the Church for a long time. Before I join the parish, I have some concerns I’d like to discuss with a priest. How do I arrange that?

Fr. Steven LaBaire or Fr. Jack Kelley would be happy to meet with you. Simply contact one of them to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet.

Q: I am not Catholic. I have a Catholic family member living in my home who is ill and unable to come to church. How do I arrange for a visit by the priest?

Contact any member of the pastoral staff and we will arrange for one of the priests to visit at a mutually convenient time.

Q: I am not a Catholic. However, I would like to learn more about the Catholic Faith. How do I do that?

Feel free to contact any member of the pastoral staff. We’d be most happy to meet with you and share our faith.
